An anthropologist and active volunteer, Professor Slater will present his recent studies on the range, depth and limitations of civil society functions in disaster relief efficacy. Lunch will be provided during lecture, followed by an informal roundtable discussion.

Department Presents Gift to Japanese Embassy
Department chair Jordan Sand and Japanese majors Shannon Munayyer and Van Barker meet with Hideki Asari, Minister, and Sachio Muto, First Secretary, Economic Section, at the Japanese Embassy, May 5, 2011. Professor Sand, Shannon and Van visited the embassy to present a contribution to earthquake relief in Japan funded by an anonymous donor to the department. Shannon, Van, and several of their classmates have also been raising money and organizing relief events through the student-run Japan Disaster Relief Committee.
Georgetown Students raise over $6000 for Japan Relief
March 27, 2011: Georgetown Students and members of the Japan Network have raised a total of $6,050.51 for Japan Relief. After much deliberation and consultations with faculty, students, and Center for Social Justice, J-NET has decided to donate all funds to two organizations, JCIE and Caritas.
The Japan Disaster Relief Committee will be spearheading the ongoing efforts for Japan Relief.

College Academic Council honors Professors
March 23, 2010: On March 18, students and faculty mingled in Copley Formal Lounge for the College Academic Council’s fifth annual College Honors, an event celebrating professors who have reached beyond the classroom and meaningfully shaped the experiences of their undergraduate students. In the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, Professors Doak, Kafalas, Sato, and Yu were nominated as top professors of the College.
