Alumni Spotlight – Jared Boddum (COL 2009), China

For several years, I have been involved with Community Tech Network, a San Francisco non-profit dedicated to helping underserved communities access and use technology. I started at CTN as a volunteer and now work on staff, where I teach technology training classes in Mandarin to Chinese-speaking seniors. I help these learners to achieve higher levels of technical ability and to feel more confident navigating the web.

Classroom with people.

At Georgetown, I was fortunate to study with Chinese program faculty Wen-Hui Li and Jingyuan Zhang and to attain higher levels of literacy and spoken proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. Georgetown FLL’s emphasis on meaning making and effective public speaking put me in good stead for working in a foreign language. Today, I pride myself on standing at the intersection of information technology and the Mandarin language, while pursuing a career devoted to teaching and service.
