Tonda Bunraku Summer Program 2026
The Tonda Bunraku Summer Program is a two-month intensive cultural immersion and performance training program hosted by the Tonda Bunraku Puppet Troupe (富田人形共遊団) in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
Founded in the 1830s and designated an Intangible Cultural Asset, the troupe has offered training programs to international students since 1993. Participants receive hands-on instruction in:
- Puppetry (人形遣い ningyōzukai)
- Narrative chanting (太夫 tayū)
- Shamisen accompaniment (三味線)
Students live with local host families, rehearse daily under the guidance of Master Hidehiko Abe (阿部秀彦) and senior troupe members, and participate in regional cultural activities across the Kansai area. The program culminates in a public performance showcasing participants’ sustained practice.
Program Dates: June 5 – August 5, 2026
Location: Nagahama, Shiga (approx. 1 hour from Kyoto)

Japanese language experience is helpful but not required. Documentation for academic credit can be provided upon request.

2026年夏に開催される「富田文楽夏留学（2ヶ月間）」の募集を開始いたしました。つきましては、学生の皆様やご関係の方々へ本プログラムをご周知いただけましたら幸いです。
本講習は、滋賀県長浜市にて開催され、江戸時代より約170年の歴史を持つ富田人形共遊団のもとで、伝統的な文楽の技術を学ぶ集中講習です。1993年以来、海外の学生も受け入れております。
参加者は人形遣い、太夫、三味線の実技指導を受けながら、ホストファミリー宅に滞在し、地域行事や文化活動にも参加します。講習の最後には成果発表の公演を行います。
