CHIN-2101: Introduction to Chinese Linguistics

Course Description: This course aims to familiarize students with the linguistic features of modern Mandarin (standard) Chinese. It investigates the fundamentals of Chinese phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and the writing system. The historical development of Mandarin Chinese and the interaction of Chinese with culture and society will also be discussed. At the end of the semester, students are expected to have a good knowledge about the key aspects of Mandarin Chinese as well as its social-cultural meanings. The course will be conducted in Chinese. Knowledge about general linguistics is preferred.
