Eligibility for the BSFS & MSFS Chinese Proficiency Exam
Students enrolled in CHIN 2001 (Third-Year Chinese I) in the fall should generally not take the Chinese proficiency exam that semester unless there is a compelling reason. CHIN 2001 students who need to pass the exam in the fall in order to study abroad in the spring must submit a letter or statement from their dean to the Chinese language coordinator. Other CHIN 2001 students with compelling reasons to take the exam must obtain recommendations from two Chinese instructors, or from one Chinese instructor and the Chinese language coordinator, before registering for the exam.
Students who wish to take the proficiency exam without having studied Chinese at Georgetown must first demonstrate proficiency equivalent to CHIN 2002 by taking the Chinese placement test offered at the beginning of each semester.
SFS requires BSFS students to enroll in a language course each semester until they fulfill the language requirement. BSFS Students who are not enrolled in Chinese or another language course during the semester in which they wish to take the proficiency exam must obtain approval from their Dean before taking the exam.
