The Washington DC bureau of TV Asahi, a major Japanese broadcasting company, covering political, economic, and foreign policy news, seeking part/full-time interns for the 2019 Fall Semester (September-December).

The intern will be supervised by the producer and assist all staff members of the DC team. He or she should be self-motivated, hardworking, and innately curious about political, military, economic, and foreign policy issues. Interest in Asia, Japanese language ability, and experience with government are all a big plus.

The intern will assist in covering a variety of political events and producing news for broadcast in Japan. This includes attending State Department press briefings and covering White House events, congressional committee hearings, think tank events, and press conferences. The intern will have to take accurate notes, orally report back the main points, and assist the producer in identifying the news value of briefings and events.

Additionally, interns will also scour numerous media sites and quickly send summaries of what he or she has assessed to be the most important news for the producer. The intern will be relied upon to filter and highlight relevant news in order to help the office stay abreast of developing issues worldwide.

The intern will also be in charge of maintaining the office’s news subscriptions and sorting/storing of all materials, as well as other administrative jobs. Duties will be a mix of clerical and research tasks, so we are looking for a versatile intern who can work in a demanding environment. When there is down time, the intern is expected to follow the news, as well as social media accounts of government agencies and presidential candidates, and update the producer on any developments.

Interested candidates should provide a resume, cover letter, and most recent (unofficial) transcript by August 10.
