EALC-4101: Senior Seminar
Course Description: This seminar is the capstone course for students majoring in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and East Asian Studies. It is intended to guide seniors through the research process and will result in a long-form research paper based on primary materials from your respective East Asian language. This is your chance to move from being a “knowledge consumer” to a “knowledge producer,” and we want you to start thinking of yourselves not just as students but specialists in your respective fields. To facilitate this process, over the course of the fall semester, you will learn to formulate and hone research questions; identify interlocutors in your field; critically engage with the work of your peers; conduct original research in your target language and cite it correctly; and, ultimately, develop and defend your own, unique argument on a topic of your choosing. The class will operate as a research workshop where we will examine and critique a variety of scholarly articles and where you will share and critique each other’s work at each stage of the research and writing process..
