JAPN-2121: Christianity in Japan
Course Description: This course will explore the history of Christianity in Japan, beginning with its introduction by the Jesuits in the mid 16th century, the subsequent “Christian century,” then persecution during the 17th through mid-19th centuries, and the reopening of the country and the beginning of Protestant missions. We will also consider how the American Occupation of Japan from 1945-52 promoted Christianity in Japan, especially Protestant Christianity. While we will read some historical surveys and secondary sources, emphasis will be on reading primary sources by Japanese Christians themselves reflecting on their faith (in English).
